Your brain has a tendency to focus on the negative…
What could go wrong…
What’s bothering you…
What you don’t like… about your life.
The problem is that for most people…
negativity has become a habit
and if you don’t consciously correct it …
you’ll end up living in a life that always frustrates you… where you’re never satisfied w/ your finances, your partner, your body… the sky is always grey… and the neighbours’ dog is always barking…
Recently…
I succumbed to my negativity bias.
I was about to fall asleep on a peaceful Friday night…
when my parents came home @ 1am and loudly woke me up
this frustrated me so much that I spent the next 2 hours planning my escape…
I figured that I would go live at a meditation centre for the next few months as I find a new place to live…
“I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THIS HAPPENING!!!!”
I thought to myself…
“I CAN’T STAND THIS ANYMORE!!!”
So… I devoted myself to focusing on how “bad” my current situation is…
and I spent the next few days feeling afraid, lost, confused, and generally pissed off.
My family noticed it…
they started asking me “are you okay?” … being a bit more rude towards me… a bit more bothersome and annoying…
this only reinforced my conviction that “MY REALITY SUCKS!”
after a few days of complete confusion and lost-ness…
I stumbled upon this video about Reality Transurfing on YouTube.
This dude named Bootsy Greenwood explained a great summary of the book… (apparently he’s read it more than 100 times!!)
In his summary, I learned a key lesson about the human brain… and why we tend to get stuck on negative lifelines as we get older…
As you may already know… the human brain is wired with this thing called “negativity bias.”
From the perspective of evolutionary biology…
it is MORE IMPORTANT for us to avoid getting eaten by a sabertooth tiger than it is for us to find some extra food.
If we don’t find extra food… we could survive for at least another few days without immediately perishing…
but if we run into a sabertooth tiger…
we’re fucked.
So, over time, our brains have evolved to be MORE REACTIVE to things that could potentially hurt us than they are to things that could potentially benefit us…
(there was a study that showed that people’s brains reacted 2x more to losing $100 vs finding $100 on the side of the road)
“So, Adam, what’s the point of all this? How does this insight help me live the life I love, where the birds are always chirping, it’s sunny outside, I love my career, my house, my family, and everything always goes my way?”
Well…
it’s important you understand that by your mid-20s…
your life generally begins to trend downhill.
People generally become less happy and more stressed-out with how their lives are going…
unless they consciously do something about it.
You see, if you simply continue living on your default script your naturally ingrained “negativity bias” will cause you to focus on every-single-thing that “could go wrong” in your life and you’ll always experience a reality that is full of things going wrong.
That’s because:
Whatever you focus your thought-energy on grows, expands, and becomes more prevalent in your reality.
That’s because reality is like a boomerang.
Whatever you throw out there will come back to you.
So, in order to override our naturally-ingrained tendency to always focus on the negative… to get pissed off when things don’t go our way… to react to negative stimuli (like a snail retracting its horns the second you poke it)…
we need to consciously install the habit of focusing on positive outcomesin our lives.
This might sound woo-woo or unpractical…
but try it out! You’ll begin to see MASSIVE SHIFTS instantly!
3 ways to re-wire your “negativity bias” so that positivity becomes the norm in your life and you begins to feel like a continuual vacation:
- Count your wins: Whenever something “goes well” in your life… don’t let it simply pass by unnoticed. CAPTURE IT! Relish the moment! Pause, and have a mini celebration! Confirm to yourself (and to your reality) that “things really do go my way!”
It could be the smallest thing… like somebody holds the door open for you at the store… or the weather is particularly nice…
Don’t let your wins pass by you unnoticed! RELISH THEM! The more you do this, the more your reality will begin to take on more and more “rosey-coloured shades” where everything actually does go your way! - Look for the advantage: Whenever something “unfavourable” happens to you… (you lose your wallet, or somebody insults you) … LOOK FOR THE ADVANTAGE! Ask yourself: “how could this thing secretly benefit me?” And trust that that advantage is exactly why this “negative thing” happened! See the positive side, and be grateful for the advantage! Soon enough, you will reap this exact outcome that you sowed in your mind.
Whenever you find yourself getting angry… or reacting negatively to something or someone… wake up, catch yourself, and scream ADVANTAGE! Now, you can sleep peacefully knowing that your reality takes care of you. - Celebrate! One of the easiest ways to make your life feel like a continual vacation is to “ride the wave of fortune.” That means to focus on the positive for no good reason… and to continue focusing on the positive more and more and more… be greedy about it! Don’t say: “that’s enough positivity for me today, thank you very much.” No! Your life has the potential to spiral upwards into higher and higher and higher levels of joy, ease, excitement, passion, and positivity! You are infinity after all! Your life can get infinitely good! Now that’s a reason for celebration! 😀
Alright my friend, I hope you enjoyed this really-practical guide for how to shift yourself out of “negativity bias” so that you can stick it to your sabertooth tiger-fearing ancestors and create a self-actualizing of continually expanding love, joy, beauty, truth, and CELEBRATION!
