Hey my friend,
I wanted to remind you that your true purpose in life
is NOT going to look like another person’s.
Of course, you can still look to those people who influence you the most (for inspiration) …
But, at the end of the day, your authentic expression is going to have a different taste, a different flavor, and different vibethan anyone else’s.
That’s because it’s going to taste like you.
( err … you get what I mean)
After helping 100s of people get clear about their true passion and purpose in life…
I’ve discovered that most people don’t realize that simply “being themselves” is a superpower.
What does this actually mean?
It means that — the things you already do automatically … the things you’ve always done since you were a young child… are a HUGE PART of your authentic life purpose.
For example:
When I was a young child I have many vivid memories of being EXTREMELY ANGRY at HOW STUPID OTHER PEOPLE AROUND ME are.
I know, everyone has this experience…
But I’ve had this clear, reoccurring feeling since I was as young as 3-years old…
wanting to scream at people and tell them how wrong they are about everything they’re doing and thinking…
coming up with clever ways to insult them… and to explain to them all the reasons why they’re wrong about whatever subject is at hand …
Now, I used to see this as an undesirable trait.
My parents called me a “grumpy bug”
And so I repressed this deeply powerful energy within me for a long time…
But… it wouldn’t go away because it was just part of who I am
As I got older and went to middle school… I would constantly complain about specifically why the teachers are doing their job poorly… or why the whole system is ineffective…
And, again, I thought this was just “me being a grumpy bug.”
But, as I got older… and I became more curious about my childhood… to look for clues about what my true life purpose could be…
I found that being a grumpy bug was actually a core part of my purpose on earth…
“Just being myself” often looks like channeling a deep dissatisfaction with the status quo…
And pointing people’s attention to how things could be done in a better, more conscious, and more effective way.
The point that I’m making here is that:
We often don’t realize what our deepest strengths and talents are because we are ‘too close’ to them.
They are “too obvious” to us… they just seem like ‘part of who we are.’
“Isn’t everyone like this?”
You might think to yourself…
But no, only you are like this.
More examples of “obvious things” that could secretly be your Life Purpose hiding in plain sight:
- obsessing over a certain movie series or character (could point to a passion for world-building, storytelling, psychology, relationship dynamics, etc.)
- “being a therapist” for your friends and family … helping them process their emotional problems
- collecting “cool things” that have a very specific style or taste (could show a knack for design, branding, decorating, etc.)
- Researching new technology, computers, gadgets (look for specifically what attracts you to these products, the power? the possibility? the efficiency? the design? the impact?)
- Being the “class clown” … or always knowing how to lighten the mood by making well-timed jokes (could show a talent for entertainment)
- Imagining funny scenarios in your head “what if this happened?” “How funny would it be if this happened?”
- Whatever you think is SO FUCKING COOL is a big signal towards your life purpose (even if it’s just a small part)
- Taking the time to make your dinner taste “extra yummy” (an obvious passion for food/taste)
- An overwhelming desire to be alone at all times (maybe you’re a spiritual seeker or recluse of some kind?)
- Always criticizing what’s wrong at parties… “they should’ve decorated it like this,” “they should’ve had this kind of food”, “why aren’t they playing this kind of music?”
Some other good places to look for your life purpose are:
- What makes you SUPER ANGRY about the world, society, your friends, or yourself? (overwhelming anger is a sign that you have abundant energy to TAKE ACTION to fix that problem)
- What do you nit-pick and criticize? (“That advertisement was so fake! It would’ve been better if they…”)
- What’s the first thing that you do on a Saturday morning? What do you watch? Read? Think about?
- Who’s pissing you off? Why are they making you so angry? What do you wish they did instead? (listen to your response)
- Finish the sentence: “I am the most naturally myself when I’m…” (what are you doing? where are you? who are you with? how do you feel?)
- “If I just let myself take action… and stopped thinking about other people judging me… what would I do/create?”
- “If I stopped thinking about ‘money’ and ‘practicality’ what would I devote my life to doing?”
- What disgusts you about the world or about other people? Why is it so revolting?
- What are you always talking about? (ask your friends!)
- “If I was making a passive income $50k/month (so that I didn’t have to work for the rest of my life) how would I spend my time?
these are all great places to start thinking about your life purpose…
